Causes of Gynecomastia
Gynecomatia is a disease which involves the development of oversized mammary glands in men. It causes breast enlargements also known as man boobs and can sometimes even cause secretion of milk. This extreme condition can affect men of all ages, including infant boys, adolescents to middle aged to the elderly. Gynecomastia is often a source of distress within teenage boys, but for the majority of boys whole pubertal gynecomastia is not caused from obesity, the so called man boobs shrink or are completely gone within a few years. As for the more common cases of gynecomastia in men, the causes have been related to an imbalance of sex hormones and an increase in estrogen levels.
Gynecomastia can occur in newborn infants or neonates, before or during puberty, and over time as an adult. Many cases of gynecomastia have no clear cause. However, some potential pathologic causes of gynecomastia are listed as: hormone including medications, increased serum estrogen, a decreased testosterone production, chronic kidney and liver disease, HIV, and other chronic disorders. Some medications documented to cause 10-20% of gynecomastia cases include cimetidine, spironolactone, omeprazole, Imatinib Mesylate, and certain antipsychotics. Prostate cancer medications such as antiandrogens can also cause man breast enlargements. The increase of estrogen levels, which is believed to be a great cause of gynecomastia, can happen in certain testicular tumors.
